The Impossible Prison

The Old  Police Station, Galleries of Justice, Nottingham

30th October-14th December 2008

FREE EXHIBITION, EDUCATION PROGRAMME AND RESOURCES

Nottingham Contemporary is a new art centre that will open next year. Our mission is international art with a strong local sense of purpose. While our building is constructed in the city’s Lace Market we are running a series of international exhibitions, event and education programmes called Histories of the Present. The next - The Impossible Prison - will be held at the Galleries of Justice, Nottingham’s museum of crime and punishment, -  a court, jail and place of execution since medieval times. Housed in the abandoned Edwardian police station, the exhibition is a group show that includes work from some of the world’s most renowned artists, including Bruce Nauman, Mona Hatoum, and Dan Graham. Together they examine the issue of control, including the surveillance techniques that are part of life for many young people.  The title and the premise of the exhibition is taken from Michael Foucault’s extraordinarily influential book Discipline and Punish. This free exhibition and education programme will allow young people to explore subjects vital to contemporary society, in the company of some of the world’s most exciting contemporary artists - and one of our greatest contemporary philosophers.

FREE SCHOOLS AND COLLEGES WORKSHOP PROGRAMME AND ILLUSTRATED EDUCATION RESOURCES

Throughout the exhibition there will be an opportunity for you and your groups to book artist-led workshops designed to suit the needs of Key Stage 3, 4 and 5 students.

Art and the Everyday Citizen will explore citizenship, and wider issues that link young people to society. The course will encourage participants to explore and develop both ideas and language to express their personal, cultural, social and political views.

Contemporary Materials and Processes covers emerging art practices, particularly the ways in which today’s artists respond to their own social and political surroundings.  Helping students to develop their own creative ideas, it will support them in applying them to contemporary artistic practices.

Both workshops will take place within the exhibition, providing an opportunity for your students to interact directly with the films, videos, installations, sculptures and paintings on display. Our creative two-hour workshops will support your own work in class, developing students’ knowledge and investigative skills while encouraging critical and creative thinking. Including discussion, research and creative activities, students will work in whole groups, small groups and as individuals. All accompanying adults are asked to participate. Students must bring a sketchbook.

The sessions will run from 10.00-12.00 a.m. and 1.20-3.20 p.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays for the duration of the exhibition.

FREE TWILGHT INSET FOR KEY STAGE 3, 4 AND 5 EDUCATORS FROM FORMAL AND INFORMAL EDUCATION

Our three-hour twilight Inset programme is an opportunity for teachers and educators to learn more about the artists included in the exhibition. The practices and theories that inform their art works are also part of this programme, so that participants gain a critical understanding of The Impossible Prison. The course explores pedagogical methods that support both teaching and learning about contemporary art. It also provides participants with practical ideas on producing contemporary art in the classroom. Educators who book for this session will have priority booking to bring their own groups to the exhibition, so that they can put the content of the course into action. The session includes educational resources.

The inset programme will run from 4pm-7pm on Tuesday 11th November
